I happen to like Barbie’s blondeness, but there are plenty of people out there who argue that Barbie isn’t very multicultural despite her many friends of color. Barbie is always super blonde and with her classic features, is always pretty.
This makes sense in a basic context – no child would really want to play with an ugly Barbie doll. Barbie is a dream, the way you think of fashion models – even if there are very few fashion models today that have platinum blonde hair. But it’s truly interesting when you consider the way older girls treat Barbie games.
Barbie might be a princess to the younger girls, but as they grow older, the girls who loved her pretty hair suddenly become inspired to cut it off. I, myself, once gave Barbie a crew cut, dyed her short hair a dark brown and gave her a few tattoos just to establish her tough image.
I wasn’t really tired of “perfect” Barbie, but it was just fun to see Barbie games not just as a perfect image of what might be, but also as what women really are – diverse.
